Battery Help
What are the best tips on charging and power management of      the iPads?
  • Apple iPads should always be charged using an official iPad compatible chargers of 2.1 amps or greater. (iPhone chargers have a lower power rating)
  • When an iPad gets below 10% of power, immediately place it on a charger.
  • Do NOT let your devices run completely out of power. Extended periods of a drained battery WILL damage the battery and the iPad.
1. My iPad is not turning on:

1.a. If your iPad won't charge (The following info is from the Apple Website, source: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201569)

If your battery won't charge or charges slowly, or if you see an alert message, learn what to do.

Plug into power

To charge your device, follow these steps:

  1. Connect your device to the USB cable that comes with it. For a third-party accessory, check that it's Apple certified.

  2. Plug into one of these three power sources:

Wall power outlet

Plug your USB charging cable into a USB power adapter, then plug the adapter into the wall (iPad compatible chargers of 2.1 amps or greater)

Computer

Plug your charging cable into a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port on a computer that's on and not in sleep mode. Don’t use the USB ports on your keyboard.

Power accessory

Plug your cable into a powered USB hub, docking station, or other Apple-certified accessory.

3. Make sure to let it charge over night or at least 8-10 hours, it may turn on by itself.

As your device charges, you'll see a lightning bolt beside the battery icon in the status bar, or a large battery icon on your Lock screen.

Follow these steps and try again after each:

  • Check your charging cable and USB adapter for signs of damage, like breakage or bent prongs.*Don't use damaged accessories.

  • Use a wall power outlet and check for firm connections between your charging cable, USB wall adapter, and wall outlet or AC power cable, or try a different outlet.

  • Remove any debris from the charging port on the bottom of your device, then firmly plug your charging cable into your device. If the charging port is damaged, your device probably needs service. Contact Ms. Legaspi.

    • After removing debris (anything caught in the port in the iPad where you plug in the cable). Let your device charge for a half hour (if your device is unresponsive afterward try the directions below:

  • Force restart your device:

    • iPad with Home button: Press and hold both the Side (or Top) button and the Home button until you see the Apple logo.

STILL HAVING ISSUES?

**If you are still having battery issues AND you completed all the steps above, follow the steps below:

5. Check Your Usage Stats

There is a feature with the iPad that is referred to as Battery Usage, or sometimes Battery Shaming. In essence, it shows which services and apps are causing the most significant power drain on your device.

  1. To launch it, go to Settings from your Home screen.

  2. Tap Battery, and then wait a few seconds for Battery Usage to populate.

  3. Tap the Show Detailed Usage button. This will provide you with a detailed breakdown of background and foreground power usage.

  4. If you tap on Last 7 Days, you’ll be able to see exactly what it is that’s draining your device the fastest.

  5. For example you have Zoom or some other app on your iPad. Power usage shows you that it’s taking up 5% of your power in the foreground, but 42% in the background. If you see something like that, it’s showing you what is draining your battery, and it also means that something has gone wrong with that app.

    1. What you’ll need to do is double-press your Home button. That will bring the fast app switcher up on the screen. Swipe to the troublesome app, and force it to quit by touching the app card and flicking it off of the display.

  6. If the same app keeps causing power-drain problems for you, you could reinstall the problem app:

    • Make sure the iPad is connected to Wi-Fi. (Any app over 100 MB must be downloaded over Wi-Fi).

      • Click and hold down problematic App.
      • A small "x" will appear on the top right corner of the App.
      • Click on the small "x" (this will delete the app).
      • Open Catalog (on iPad's home screen, or search "Catalog" on the iPad).
        •  Look for the application you just deleted.
        •  Select Install.

    •  Select Install.
  • If the content in question is not listed in the Catalog, contact iThelpdesk@olmmschool.com (include student name, iPad #, and missing App)
2. My App won't stay open, it automatically closes after
    I click on it.
  • Make sure the iPad is connected to Wi-Fi. (Any app over 100 MB must be downloaded over Wi-Fi.
  • Click and hold down problematic App.

  • Open Catalog (on iPad's home screen, or search "Catalog" on the iPad).
